I Don't Need You Tonight
© Brian Chu
Well I saw you just the other night
You asked if I was alright
Well what could I say
So I told a little white lie
I said I was feeling fine
And then you went away

But if I held you tonight like the other night
I’d see you’re still only a girl
Well I open my eyes and I realize
That I don’t need you tonight

Well I saw you with that other guy
It hurt for a little while
Why it hurt I don’t know
Well it’s taken me a little time
But I'm back on the front line
I still got scenes to go

But if I held you tonight like the other night
I’d see you’re still only a girl
Well I open my eyes and I realize
That I don’t need you tonight

Wait What?

Well so what if I gave a sigh
When I saw you with that other guy
Now I laugh it off
I've been seen around with other girls
I've stayed away from your world
Heah, this ain’t so tough

But if I held you tonight like the other night
I’d see you’re still only a girl
Well I open my eyes and I realize
That I don’t need you tonight

And if I held you tonight like the other night
I’d see you’re still only a girl
Well I open my eyes and I realize
That I don’t need you tonight
I don’t need you tonight
I don’t need you tonight

Let Your River Run
© Brian Chu
I don’t know what you need
I don’t know what I am
I don’t know what you see
I don’t know what you plan
For me…
I don’t know where I go
Sometimes I just let flow
I don’t know what to do
Pressured seams all on you
And I
I know my lies
And I
I am not done
Let my river run
I don’t know what to do
I don’t know what to say
Got a dream under way
When I walk it just fades
And you
I just want one
And you
I am not done
Let my river run
Can you hear me
Can you see me
Can you read me
Can you feel me
I got some place to go
running through my own lows
its 4am on my own
another life has begun
let your river run
let your river run
let your river run
let your river run

Highlights and Hindsights

Hey son, want to get high?
Maybe that’ll loosen me up to share another side
I know, you’re wondering why
You and I are old enough now, to talk about life
And I know, what I’ve said
I got little time to get my soul of my head
This is late time of my life – can’t let it stop and let it go down in the dirt
I’m proud of what I have done
And I got more to share where I come from
Dance if you want to dance
Smile while you take the chance
Highlights and Hindsights
Are all the things on my mind to share tonight
Hands on the water’s edge
Lines on your paper sketch
Highlights and hindsight’s
Don’t you know, you know you know what you gotta know
And maybe I want to know
Hey girls - you got a little time?
Will you help me shape this life with what I got, I gotta get mine
And I hope that you feel a little soul, maybe the words will hit home,
and maybe they’ll last longer than mine
And I know and I’ve seen
the middle of my life, in the middle of the night, there’s a terror awaiting me,
Something so bright yet I can only see
I know when I close my eyes, maybe I’ll see what I hope to see, I see a new life
Dance if you want to dance
Smile while you take the chance
Highlights and Hindsights
Are all the things on my mind to share tonight
Hands on the water’s edge
Lines on your paper sketch
Highlights and hindsight’s
Don’t you know, you know you know what you gotta know
Dance if you want to dance
Smile while you take the chance
Highlights and Hindsights
Are all the things on my mind to share tonight
Hands on the water’s edge
Lines on your paper sketch
Highlights and hindsights
Don’t you know, you know you know what you gotta know
And maybe I gotta know
And maybe I want to know
And definitely I gotta know

What's it about: Your kids becoming adults

Don’t you know why, sitting here
Hold down the wall, closing here
I hold my eyes, baby baby here
You said the words, made my eyes close
Don’t you know why, I see you now
and the world, don’t you go
This is my time
Though I might have known
You are standing here
I close my eyes and sing
and saw the world
You might have known
how I might have felt
until I held your eyes
until I closed..
So I might have gone, on and on
and so I might have gone, on and on
had it not been for you
This is all I know
I close my eyes and sing
Words they come along and the words they sing
I look into your eyes
I’m blinded by the sun
Don’t you know the words are holding on
This is all I know
This is all I’ve said
I noticed all the words
and I ain’t going away
and I am here for you
I know you’re there for me
hey I saw all the words
and I’ve been away holding on tight
don’t you know why holding on so right
I know all the words don’t you know why don’t you know why
Don’t you know why
Just Another Day
© Brian Chu
The thing that has kept us all apart
has brought us all here to share our hearts
Tears are falling on our masks
but we can’t hold on
The days are alone the days are gone
Holding the memories for so long
I've been searching since you’ve gone
for the words to say
I close my eyes to see your face
Just another day to be with you
Just another song to sing with you
Another game, another play, another home, another place
There's so much more I want to do
I want to have another talk with you
Another show, another sun, another walk, another one
I lay on the floor and look above
I listen the sounds of songs you loved
Loneliness even though I have
family around
Trying to fall asleep at night
Imagine you asleep alone that night
I dream that I was with you when
You closed your eyes
Just another day to be with you
Just another song to sing with you
Another game, another play, another home, another place
There's so much more I want to do
I want to have another talk with you
Another show, another sun, another walk, another one
and I'm holding on, and I'm holding on
and I'm holding on for you
and I'm holding on to see your light
and I'm holding on to say good night
and I'm holding on
Just another day to be with you
Just another song to sing with you
Another game, another play, another home, another place
There’s so much more I want to do
I want to have another talk with you
Another show, another sun, another walk, another one
Epilogue:
Just another day to be with you
A few more words from me to you
Another song, another sun, another walk, another one
And I think of you every day
I tell my kids about your way
I’ll share your words, I’ll share your thoughts,
I’ll share your dreams, I’ll share your love…

Inspiration: Mike's father passed away in 2020. His eulogy stuck with me on my drive home. The words I remembered went from words to lyrics to melody on a voice memo all while driving down 93 south. Other lines come from talks with friends on losing a parent.
